Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose or blood sugar levels are elevated. Blood glucose comes from the food you eat and is your main source of energy. A hormone made by the pancreas called Insulin helps glucose from food to get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t use insulin well or make enough insulin. Glucose then doesn’t reach your cells but stays in your blood. Having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems over time.
Although there is no cure for diabetes, with the right care provided by an expert team, you can manage your diabetes and lead a healthy life.
Diabetology is the clinical science of diabetes mellitus, its treatment, diagnosis, and follow-up. It is a specialized field of endocrinology. A Diabetologist is any physician, including endocrinologists, whose research and/or practice efforts are mainly in diabetes care. A diabetologist can regulate medication timing and dosage, and will also concern themselves with the potential consequences of diabetes.
What are the different types of diabetes?
Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes are very common.
Type 1 Diabetes
In Type 1 diabetes mellitus, no insulin is secreted by the pancreas. The cells in your pancreas that make insulin are attacked and destroyed by your immune system. Although Type 1 diabetes can appear at any age it is usually diagnosed in children and young adults.
Type 2 Diabetes
If your body does not use or make insulin well you have Type 2 diabetes. This is called Insulin Resistance. This is the most common type of diabetes. At any age, even during childhood, you can develop Type 2 diabetes. However, it is in middle-aged and older people that this type of diabetes is mostly detected.
Gestational Diabetes
Some women when they are pregnant develop gestational diabetes. After the baby is born this type of diabetes mostly goes away. However, you have a greater chance of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life if you’ve had gestational diabetes. Sometimes Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed during pregnancy.
